Lesson 10Beginner8

The Full Picture

The rewards and real costs of building your salon — both sides of the coin.

The Rewards of Building Something

There are no words to describe going from a poor kid who wore hand-me-downs to standing at a cocktail party surrounded by people you once watched on TV — and having them eager to meet you.

That transformation — from nothing to recognisable authority — is one of the most powerful experiences a person can have. The pride of creation, the freedom of ownership, the respect of your peers. These are real, and they are worth pursuing.

Building your own business is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. Just make sure you understand what it actually costs first.

The Real Costs You Don't See

The author's eldest son had attended seven different kindergartens by age six — the family moved repeatedly as the business grew. On Christmas Eve, they worked until 10pm. By the time he got home, his children were already asleep.

They worked Christmas Day. New Year's Day. Every major holiday. And the deepest challenge: he could never stop thinking about the business — day or night. His mind was always solving problems, running scenarios, planning the next move.

The Other Side: Working for Someone

If you've built genuine professional skills, any premium salon will welcome you. The stress is significantly lower. You have far more free time for family and the things you actually enjoy.

There is no shame in this path. In fact, if you value financial security, a good work-life balance, and time for personal growth — working as a senior stylist or manager in a great salon might give you everything you actually want, without the risk of ownership.

Owning a salon is not the only path to a successful career. Know what you truly value — then choose the path that delivers it.

Finding Your Balance

The author survived the 2008–09 financial crisis, the 2014 collapse of Russian tourism, and COVID — selling his last salon just six months before the pandemic. Luck played a role. So did decades of hard work and resilience.

His final advice: find balance first. Understand that happiness is not directly tied to money or status — it is tied to your mindset and your relationship with what you have built.

Action Items — implement this week

  • ✓Write down your top 3 personal priorities (family, income, freedom, status, creativity)
  • ✓Honestly ask: does owning a salon serve those priorities — or does it conflict with them?
  • ✓Calculate how many personal events or evenings you've genuinely missed in the past year due to work
  • ✓Read Chapter 10 of the book — the full story puts everything in perspective
  • ✓Speak to one established salon owner AND one senior employed stylist — ask both what they wish they'd known
